Promulgation of the Ratio Formationis

Promulgation of the Ratio Formationis of the Brothers of Saint John

On December 23 in Rimont, Brother François-Xavier, Prior General of the Congregation, solemnly and gratefully announced the signing of the decree promulgating the Ratio Formationis Congregationis Sancti Johannis. The joy of this event was followed by a Mass of thanksgiving.

A text defining initial and continuing training

The result has been an immense amount of collaborative work, which has kept the Congregation busy over the last 6 years; the last 3 years more intensively, with the creation of numerous sub-commissions and work sessions at Conventual, Vicarial, Pro-Provincial and General Chapters, in which all brothers have had the opportunity to participate and contribute. Under the guidance of a solid team, exchanges between the brothers and numerous outside contributors and the Church followed one another.

According to Brother François-Xavier, the promulgation of the Ratio Formationis is an important milestone for the Congregation, but it is destined to be taken up again once the Constitutions have been recast, so it is not a final completion, but it does provide very good guidelines for the initial and ongoing formation of the brothers. It is a helpful text for all brothers to take stock of any aspect of their personal formation. Finally, it is a very timely tool at a time when Houses of Formation are being founded in various places (France, Mexico, Philippines, Togo, USA): a key tool for ensuring the unity as well as the diversity of formation in the Congregation.

For Brother Jean-Polycarpe, head of the Commission that carried out the Ratio Formationis project and General Head of Formation, this promulgation is the culmination of a long process that began with the work of the formators and the reflections of all the brothers who wanted to advance in their vocation, their formation and their personal formation. This step invites and encourages the Community to set out on formation and to continue to advance along the path begun by the Ratio Formationis project itself. The Provincial Chapters at the beginning of 2023 appointed Provincial Formation Officers who, together, are already continuing to move forward on this path of ongoing formation.

In a few words, Brother Jean-Polycarpe concluded these years dedicated to work and exchange with all the participants:

“How beautiful is our vocation! We received an incredible gift. Let’s not be afraid to welcome it, to say what is beautiful in it, to value it and to keep moving forward to conform ourselves more and more to God’s will”.

Brother Christian’s testimony

“As I listened to the presentation of the Ratio Formationis (of which I had read a small part of the first drafts), I was struck by the fact that it was a great work involving consultation with many brothers (60) in all the Vicariates, with 12 sub-commissions composed of brothers ‘from the grass roots’, who we wouldn’t have thought of spontaneously and who were able to express everything they ‘had’ to say about formation in our Community.

I was delighted to note that the commission meetings were fine moments of formation, fraternity and communion, even (and above all) if the text had to be revised over and over again, receiving the right criticism and reformulating it. All this was done in line with the General Chapter; a truly synodal attitude. I also think it’s great that you didn’t hesitate to call on other congregations, women religious from our Community and from other communities…

Finally, thanks to Brother Jean-Polycarpe and all those who worked closely with him, with drive, audacity, tenacity, perseverance, mutual listening, competence and the search for truth. All this work will nourish the brothers, sometimes provoking salutary revisions of life, producing fruit for the Community. Thank you for everything. Entrusting to the Virgin Mary and to Saint John the reception and implementation of this document.”

The first Provincial Chapters of the Congregation

Published on January 30, 2023

First Provincial Chapters of the Brothers of Saint John

At their last General Chapter in November 2022, the Brothers of Saint John voted to decentralise their governance, with the different regions acquiring the status of Provinces. The whole Congregation is currently experiencing its first Provincial and Vice-Provincial Chapters during which the elections of their Provincials Priors are taking place.

– Province of France: from Saturday 7 to Friday 13 January 2023 at Notre-Dame du Chêne (72),
– Vice-Province of Asia-Oceania: from Saturday 7 to Friday 13 January 2023 in Cebu,
– Province of Europe: from Tuesday 10 to Tuesday 17 January 2023 in Marchegg,
– Province of the Americas: from Monday 16 to Saturday 21 January 2023 in Mexico City,
– Province of Africa: from Monday 30 January to Tuesday 7 February 2023 in Simbock.

With this decentralisation of their governance, the brothers want to implement part of their reform which consists in being closer to the needs of the priories and in making their structure less pyramidal in order to favour more participation in the decisions. The new Provincials and Vice-Provincials Priors will have direct authority for the governance of their Provinces, including the assignment of brothers who are affiliated to them or made available by other Provinces. The role of the General Prior is therefore to watch over the unity, spirit and life of the whole Congregation in its international dimension.

We entrust the continuation of these first Chapters to your prayers.

Provincial Chapter of France

Brother Henri-Dominique de Certaines was elected Provincial Prior of France on 10 January, during the first Provincial Chapter of France. Brother Henri-Dominique entered the novitiate of the Brothers of Saint John in Saint Jodard in 2006 at the age of 21. After his simple profession in 2008 and his theology studies, he did his apostolic internship in Cameroon as Vice-principal of the Vogt College in Yaoundé. He took his perpetual vows in 2012 and was ordained a deacon in 2014. He will then be for two years curate (right-hand man of the prior) of the formation house of Saint-Jodard (42). After his ordination to the priesthood in 2017, he was sent on mission to Lomé in Togo to work in the university parish. Elected prior in 2019 of the priory of Saint-Quentin-sur-Indrois, in the diocese of Tours, he returned to France.

Vice-Provincial Chapter of Asia-Oceania

In accordance with the wishes of the brothers of Asia-Oceania, the General Chapter of the Congregation (October 2022) asked the Prior General to establish this vicariate as a “vice-province”, in order to ensure that they have the necessary means for the mission and a sufficient number of formators for vocations. Brother Justin Lee was elected Vice Provincial Prior of Asia-Oceania on January 9, at the first Vice Provincial Chapter held at the Novitiate in Cebu City, Banawa. Brother Justin joined the Brothers of Saint John in 1999 and, after his formation, was assigned to Cebu from 2006 to 2017. He now lives at the priory in New Zealand. A vice-provincial assembly preceded the Chapter, which meant that all brothers, regardless of their stage of formation, were called to participate. For the Chapter, only a few delegates represent the vice-province and will have to choose their Province.

Provincial Chapter of the Americas

The first Provincial Chapter of the Americas took place from 16 to 21 January 2023 in Mexico City. The brothers began their gathering with a pilgrimage to the shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, patroness of the Americas. The Province is made up of seven priories: four in the United States, two in Mexico, and one in Brazil, which presents great challenges in terms of a common language and the mission of each country. But the brothers are also aware of the vitality and richness of their Province and give thanks to the Lord for the mission he entrusts to them.

The Chapter took place in a fraternal atmosphere, which allowed us to have exchanges in truth and in depth. Among other things, the Chapter elected the Provincial Prior: Brother Jesus Rodriguez, the person responsible for formation for the Province: Brother Mario González, and a Councillor: Brother Miguel Pro Castañeda.

The Chapter was marked by the deliberations for the elections of the Prior Provincial and his Council. The following were elected: Brother Côme-Emmanuel, Prior Provincial of Africa; Brother Joseph, Provincial Officer in charge of Formation; and Brothers Gilbert (Vicar Provincial), Joseph Marie de la Trinité (elected), Théodore de la Croix (appointed) and Thibault (elected) as Councillors.

Retreat, Bucharest

Come Holy Spirit!

No, this is not a representation of Pentecost but a day of recollection preached by Brother Emmanuel and Brother Dan for about fifty religious brothers and sisters in Bucharest.

I desire mercy not sacrifice.

Together they explored what can help them be faithful in their religious life and how to establish merciful communication between religious.

As is their tradition in Lent, the consecrated brothers and sisters from the diocese of Bucharest gathered for their recollection. For a year it was planned that this would take place at the Monastery of the Holy Family, priory of the Brothers of St. John in Bucharest, but March 13 being still a critical period around Covid, another venue, the spacious Monastery of Cioflicieni of the Carmelite Fathers, was chosen. The preaching was the responsibility of the Brothers of Saint John.

The morning sermon was held by Brother Emmanuel, on the theme It is mercy that I desire, not sacrifice (Hosea 6:6). Without falling into Pharisaism, consecrated persons must be attentive to what the world especially expects from them: a witness of mercy. People need to be able to count on them. Some signs of mercy to look for and especially to live: joy, not only in oneself but around oneself, a joy that we like to communicate; beauty, in the sense of making oneself agreeable to others; humility, a beauty restrained, not flaunted; the love of silence, the secret of lovers; and finally a desire to cooperate. But we must also be able to maintain this mercy, we must hold on, and two means were emphasized: the need to be open, for transparency, and also the benefit of celebrating joyful times together as a family.

With all the sisters present, it was easy to sing beautiful Offices and Mass. Brother Dan gave the homily. In the afternoon, the consecrated brothers and sisters gave a Lectio on Mt. 18:15-20, in small groups. As a rule each group had no more than two members of the same Community, so that those from very diverse backgrounds got to know each other better.

Angelus TV

A national Catholic television is born in Romania, with the support of 5 bishops of the country and under the motto: ‘Come and see!’ This motto continually appears  in many of the “homemade” programmes during this Covid year. On May 16, Social Communications Day, Feast of Blessed Vladimir Ghika, a 24-hour internet streaming site was launched, with the hope that in the Autumn it would be possible to receive a TV license and transmit via cable. Brother Dan, accompanied by a nun, provide the spirituality programme: “Men and the Words of the Spirit” and Brother Emmanuel is preparing with a laywoman a programme “Gospel on Bread”: cooking whilst talking about the Gospel.

Brother Lazare deceased

Our Community in Rimont is in mourning once more with the passing of Our brother Lazare who died in hospital at 4:35pm, Wednesday 14 April.

Brother Lazare was taken urgently to hospital on Good Friday in Chalon-sur-Saône after consulting his cardiologist. It turned out he had Covid-19, made worse by his heart problems. He was put on life-support, Easter Wednesday 8 April, and later, into an artificial coma. With his condition critical and with no signs of improvement, the medical team took the decision to no longer keep him alive by artificial means. His family was also consulted and gave their consent. Brother Jovien-Andréa, Brother Gonzague and Brother Joseph-Marie were able to accompany him in his last moments with prayers for the dying. He received the Last Rites on Saturday.

The funeral Mass will be held here in Rimont cemetery next Tuesday 20 April, 2:30 p.m.

Brother Lazare entered the Community in 1988. He was first assigned to the Corbara priory where he resided between 1991 and 1998. His journey included short stints in Laus, La Chaise-Dieu and Cognac, before arriving at Rimont in the Spring of 2000, almost 21 years ago. Despite his heart surgery from around this time, Brother Lazare continued to make the most of his life. He was part of the postal team as ‘Vaguemestre’ and carried out various other tasks, heath permitting.

By providence, his ‘Last Supper’ with the community was on Maundy Thursday. May Our Lord be with him on his journey from this world to the next and Our Heavenly Father.

News from Lumen Valley in Kara (Togo)

Published on April 13, 2021

The work in Lumen Valley continues. The brothers have taken great heart as to how much the youth have invested of themselves to the project, a testiment to what can be achieved.

How the work has progressed has even surprised those who initiated it and has gone beyond a simple construtction project to a way of life. The work as a whole has brought with it much enthusiasm and sets out a good blueprint for the future.

Buiding Works

Everything is moving quickly and given that the work of the resourcing centre was launched not even a year ago, in June 2020, a great deal of credit goes to the work of the young people.

There are currently 5 bungalows of different categories of the major works nearing completion.

On the structural side, the 40-room building also is almost completed.

The 25 metre thatched roof water tower which has 4 rooms above it is almost finished too. Besides storing up to 70m3 of water to feed the entire center by gravity, it will also serve as a control tower for the entire estate.

The 300-seat conference room is in advanced stages of construction. It is intended for hosting seminars / conferences and retreats.

The other part in progress is the construction of the novitiate launched barely 8 weeks ago that is already in the process of being upgraded. The objective of this first phase is to launch operations in June 2022.

Business Schools

Business schools are making giant strides in terms of creation and work capacity. Training is given to support them in their progress each week.

Landscaping, thatching, the working of natural stones from Togo, honey production or even sheep-rearing, all the latest news can be followed in the Lumen Valley newsletter for the month of April.

Brother Guy-Marie deceased

Brother Guy Marie deceased

Brother Guy-Marie sadly departed from us Saturday 10 April 2021 at 07h15 at the age of 94. He left us peacefully 5 minutes after Brother Timothée, who has been accompanying him for the last few months, had visited him. He was also in the presence of Brother Gonzague who was praying by his side at the time.

Most of us will remember him from his days at Rimont where he had been since May 1986, where he became Regular Oblate, 8 May 1987. He entered the Congregation at 58 having lived in a House of Charity in Africa.

With the death of Brother Jean-Pierre-Marie Rosins on 25 March, this year’s Easter celebrations have been enveloped by the departures of our brothers leaving us for heaven.

Funeral details

The funeral Mass of Brother Guy-Marie will be held Thursday 15 April, followed by his burial at Molamboz cemetery in the Jura region.

Let us turn in prayer to our mother Mary for whom he had a great devotion.
